Victim Assistance Legal Representation Program

Services

Safe Alliance's Victim Assistance Court Program assists victims of domestic violence who seek Domestic Violence Protective Orders (DVPOs). Those seeking DVPOs have been recently assaulted or threatened. Court Advocates provide crisis intervention and safety planning services, and help victims complete the application for the emergency DVPO. Advocates accompany victims to court, educating them about the court process and providing emotional support during court proceedings. Advocates support all victims they encounter in the courtroom, regardless of whether that victim worked with Safe Alliance to file the DVPO. Staff and pro bono attorneys provide free legal representation and court advocacy to those seeking a one-year DVPO, and to those seeking to renew an expiring DVPO.

DVPOs are essential components of many victims' safety plans, and can greatly impact a victim's ability to live independently from an abuser. DVPOs can determine temporary child custody arrangements as well as a range of financial outcomes, such as who maintains the right to live in a shared home and who will retain possession of a vehicle. Absent effective advocacy and legal representation, the lack of a court order can leave a victim destitute.

Through the Victim Assistance Court Program, victims of domestic violence increase safety for themselves and their children, and are empowered and supported as they navigate a challenging and often intimidating legal system.
